The trip out to Arizona and Mexico had some of
the best food I have ever tasted in my whole life, but one of the most unique
and delicious food was found at the Desert Rain Café. While there were (also delicious) Sonoran
Hotdogs being sold across the street, was a great choice to go for lunch. The cacti bud pico de gallo let us get
revenge on the species that attacked us on our hike around Baboquivari Peak.
This restaurants value is not just in its food
though, but what it supports. All the
food served at the restaurant is made with traditional, healthy, natural
ingredients. It wants to spread the word
about healthier options like beans and cacti to an area with a Type II diabetes
epidemic. These traditional foods help
regulate the blood sugar, releasing carbs at a longer, steadier rate, giving
the consumer more energy over a longer period of time with less sugar spikes,
unlike the majority of commodities and food sold at Bache’s. The store connected to the restaurant also
helps stimulate the local economy and provides people with the materials and skills
to work as a basket weaver, producing beautiful baskets and clay pots.
